For years, Starfleet designers have created smaller ships based on their leading designs. These designs often build on the workhorse capability of their parent designs, in some cases outlasting the ships they were designed to supplement. Constitution to Miranda, Excelsior to Centaur, wherever one looks there is an instance of this in Starfleet history.
The Nebula Class is no different. Designed as the workhorse variant of the Galaxy Class, the Nebula Class has been further specialized to be the Federation's premier research and development vessel. As such, it has numerous scientific advantages over it's larger counterpart, including enhanced atmospheric sensors. Being a research and development ship though, it also possesses numerous experimental Starfleet technologies, such as a point defense systen, shield disruptor and the ever powerful gemini effect. Alongside it's variants in the Melbourne and Phoenix Classes, the Nebula is ready as ever to face whatever threat the Federation may face.
